Richmond Station – London Inspired Café at Bali Lane

Oh, a London inspired café. No wonder, owner Phyllis Lau worked as a barista at a café next to Richmond Station in London, therefore the name.

There are many faces of London. Richmond Station Café situated at one end of Bali Lane takes a more casual, laid-back approach. (Whereas nearby British-inspiredHyde & Co has a more dainty meets elegance approach.)

Graffiti art on the wall, homemade cakes, scones and crumpets, and a very hospitable owner.

Menu prices are a dollar or two on the high side though, a Norwegian Salmon with Pesto Sauce at $25.90, 3 Burger Combo at $24.00, Zesty Crab Angel Hair Pasta at $18.90, Crab Benedict at $16.90, and a Butterscotch Cake with $9.50. Could be the rental.

With that said, I ordered the most expensive item on that menu (because they said it was the best) and I liked it.

A thick slab on fresh pinky salmon (yes yes) resting on potato wedges (is it too much if I asked for fresh cut fries for its price) and side salad (needs more dressing). The skin was thinly crisp, and meat well-seasoned and moist.

While some other cafes use crabcake as a base, Richmond Station’s Crab Benedict ($16.90) has home-made crumpets with a sprinkling on crab meat on top. The eggs were perfect runny, though the crab meat (we know this is expensive in Singapore) was deficient for a more robust experience.

I figure that Singaporeans are more accustomed to the French and Japanese style of cakes – mostly pretty, delicate and light.

The cakes offered here are larger in slices, whole lot creamier, and could require some sharing. (Also not the photogenic enough for Instagram type, but I am all for substance rather than just style.)

Despite being not overly polished (yet), Richmond Station sends an easy-going vibes for informal chats and shared bites. I actually spent an afternoon here despite lots of talking going around.

Offering more ‘London-type’ of food and fine-tuning some of the dishes would help give this station a strong branding.
